Spasms of Azamgarh!

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

The Ulama Council trying to go political may assuage some Muslims, yet, its constituency remains undefined, and some question its funding, says Puja Avasthi.

A frenzied delirium of known origins but untested prescriptions throbs through Azamgarh ever since it was pronounced terror's nursery. The symptomatic question how to treat a malaise that is pushing the district into depression pounds through offices and tea stalls, within madrasas and in homes, at colleges and on buses.

One remedy on offer is the Ulama Council, which recently thrust 4,000 people on Delhi to demand, among other things, a judicial probe into the Batla House encounter. A second display on February 20 will take many more aboard the "Ulama Express" to Lucknow.

Mohammed Aamir Rashadi, convenor of the council says, "We cannot trust political parties. We need political power to make ourselves heard. Azamgarh is a test case."

The council's appeal is drawing support from some of Azamgarh's best. Among them, Javed Akhtar, a popular orthopaedic surgeon whose son Asadullah is one of Azamgarh's 26 terror suspects. He believes the idea of supporting Muslim candidates of other parties has failed, as such leaders are powerless. "Our vote should go to our own party. I respect all religions, but want to be known as a Muslim.”

Formed in October, the council with its 18 founder members is working through volunteers in Azamgarh and neighbouring districts besides networking with organisations beyond UP. There has been no membership drive, yet, according to the council's founder member Tahir Madni, director of the Jamiatul Falah, "Many Hindus have been asking how they can join us.”
