Shakuntala told TSI: “I am good at pedicure and manicure. I also do facials, and am now learning threading. One day while working on the eyebrows of a lady, I made a mistake. It was scary, but she did not say anything, rather, smiled when she was told my background.”
Her colleague and teammate to the New York jamboree, Rampyari says: “So many times I had told my family that I would quit this job. But my mother-in-law would merely snigger at me, and ask, ‘what other job will you do, pray?’ So I had never thought that I would one day fly to a foreign country and perform on the ramp."
“The fashion show had very little to do with fashion and everything to do with sanitising the lives of these women,” says Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International. He explains that the sheer humiliation of their jobs had made these women so bereft of self-esteem, that it was decided to ramp up their confidence by a foreign trip.
