Modi–Vaghela political Mahabharat goes back a long way

Godhra - the town that saw the worst of communal clashes in 2002 - is set to become the political battle ground for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Union Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela in the Lok Sabha elections in April this year.

After Vaghela lost his constituency Kapadvanj to delimitation, he has been eyeing Godhra - apparently also getting a green signal from the Congress High Command. Just a day after Modi’s much publicised Republic Day gala in Godhra, Vaghela indicated to surprised listeners in Lunavada, a small town near Godhra, that he will be contesting Godhra Parliamentary Constituency in the forthcoming General Elections.

In what is touted as a ‘sop’, Modi celebrated the 60th Republic Day on a grand scale in Godhra and announced a package of Rs 1400 crore for the developmental works for Godhra and Panchmahal districts - areas that were the key sites of communal rioting in 2002 following the Godhra train burning carnage.

The Modi-Vaghela’ standoff go back a long way. In 1995, when the BJP had come to power, Vaghela could not become chief minister because of Modi’s interference. Vaghela revolted and left the BJP, leaving it divided. Later, with Congress’ support, Vaghela served as the CM from 1996-97. Now again, the two former friends and now adversaries are girdling their loins for another round of sparring.

With time, the saffron-coloured Modi has morphed into a debonair CEO of Gujarat. Be that as it may, the battle of Godhra could have just begun.
