Safexpress has no plans to go international. Kanaujia believes that “India has a huge untapped potential and there’s no reason to go international before we can get hold of the Indian market.” But when it comes to handling the foreign competition on the Indian soil, the company seems to be taking it lightly.
“It will take a lot of time for global big names to understand the complex geography and Indian taxation structure,” Kanaujia tells B&E. No doubt the entrance of foreign players will bring fair practices and maturity in the sector, but keeping in mind the big pockets and huge size of players like FedEx, DHL and TNT they surely have the potential of giving Safexpress some sleepless nights going forward. Currently, Safexpress is pretty ‘safe’, since foreign companies cannot enter India without a tie up with local partners, but if the government changes its stance, things could get difficult. Considering the possibility of rough weather if this happens, Safexpress would do well to ensure that it continues to proactively map and adopt global best practices. Besides they might want to consider revving up their courier business too. Though it is a volumes business, it makes sound sense in the form of a strategic risk diversification.
