Boardroom drama at Accor questions corporate governance. Should the CEO & Chairman ranks be split?
This is not the first time you would hear of boardroom fights in the name of governance. Such is the situation at Accor Group of hotels today. Chairman Serge Weinberg handed-in his papers on February 24, 2009, losing his ‘ego’logical battle with CEO Gilles Pellison and many on the Board. What’s more, his ‘exit’ decision also saw 5 more ‘goodbye’ letters being handed-in. The other protagonist is Pelisson, who alongwith Weinberg took charge of Accor 3 years back, and matter worked out fine between the two. But then as they say, only change is permanent; change in Chiarmanship and change in boardroom peace. And even Pellison talks about it as he says, “It is also true that three years later, many things have changed...” Then comes the rough part. When Pellison was voted as the CEO & Chairman, Weingberg & his supporters raised questions on corporate governance norms! Supporters of Weinberg even came forward with the claim that ever since Gerard Pellison (Gilles’ uncle) came to power, he had been trying to “fix” his nephew at the top spot. So should the Harvard MBA play the dual role, in tumultous times? Is governance damned at Accor? Well, there are two reasons why shareholders not not worry – one is Pellison’s experience, and the other, research! Pellison has vast experince across sectors, heading companies from Novotel to Euro-Disney and Bouygues Telecom.
