B&E: Do you think the economic slowdown has affected the Indian food processing industry? If yes, then till what extent? AK: No, the economic recession has not at all affected the Indian food processing industry. In fact, we have been growing at the rate of 13.1%, which is much higher than the economic growth of 6%. Even the latest data shows that the Indian food processing industry has been spearheading the economic growth of the country.
B&E: What initiatives are you undertaking to sustain this growth? AK: We are encouraging advanced technologies to utilise the remains and by-products of the food processing industry along with the principal agricultural produce. Further, we are encouraging research and development for the process development and better packaging. This is being supported by infrastructure facilities too.
B&E: But what about providing funds to this promising industry? AK: We have already divided the industry into potential units and we are willing to provide funds as per the requirement, which can even go up to Rs.35 million per unit. We are also providing 75% subsidy for setting up a new unit or modernising an existing one. In fact, we have de-centralised the process because it’s not possible for every farmer or investor to come to Delhi to apply for the subsidy. Excise duty on several commodities has also been reduced.
