Are indians so blind as to praise a movie that insults hinduism and india? sutanu guru examines

Dear ‘Secular’ Indian,

Imagination, pride and a sense of legacy and heritage are the bed rocks of a civilisation. Replace that with voyeurism, self-loathing and destructive denial and you land up with a wounded civilisation. And what else is India but a wounded civilisation? And what else is Hinduism but the oldest religion of the world that secular Indians born often as Hindus are bent upon trampling, denigrating and destroying?

I know why you are going ga ga over "Slumdog Millionaire". Since most of you are familiar with Hindi, I am sure it should have been titled ‘Jhopadpatti ka Crorepati Kutta’. Why should that offend you? After all, the movie supposedly very movingly portrays reality, isn’t it? But I am sure you are gloating not just because Danny Boyle has successfully peddled poverty, grime, squalor and hopelessness that surround much of India. You are gloating because the movie is a brilliant assault on the very idea of India; the India that you so passionately hate and denounce at every available forum. You have so freely, indiscriminately and hysterically bandied about powerful words like Genocide, Mass Murder, State Terror, Fascism, Talibanization, Discrimination, Barbarism and Feudalism while talking about India and Hinduism that sometimes even agnostic Hindus like me start wondering if you may be right after all.

But having read "Q&A", the book by diplomat Vikas Swarup and seen the movie, I must protest at the desecration of India and the denigration of Hinduism. What bothers me more is that the movie is targeted primarily at a western audience, most of which has a fairly vague idea of what is happening in India. Through powerful cinematic images, sound and a forcible imposition of context when none exist, Danny Boyle will almost certainly convince the western audience that the worst perceptions they had about India are indeed true. And how brilliantly insidious and clever Danny Boyle and his team have been at the job!

US and Russia must not delay in reviving the process for global abolition of nuclear arms

The agreement by the American and Russian presidents to renew the strategic arms reductions treaty has revived hope for global abolition of nuclear arms. The urgency can hardly be exaggerated. Nuclear weapons may come into the possession of states that might use them, as well as of stateless terrorists – creating new threats of unimaginable proportion. A noble dream few years ago, the elimination of nuclear arms is no longer the idea of only populists and pacifists as it has now been adopted by professionals – politicians (known for their realism) and academics (known for their responsibility).

The invention of nuclear weapons answered the needs and risks of the time when security rested on a balance of fear, as reflected in the concept of mutually assured destruction. Initially, nuclear weapons were held by only five global powers, all permanent members of the UN Security Council. Today, the global picture is different. Sparked by Poland’s Solidarity Movement, the Warsaw Pact dissolved, the Soviet Union disintegrated, and the bipolar world and its East-West divide vanished. An order based on the dangerous doctrine of mutual deterrence, was not, however, replaced with a system founded on cooperation and interdependence. Destabilisation and chaos followed, accompanied by a sense of uncertainty.

B&E: Do you think the economic slowdown has affected the Indian food processing industry? If yes, then till what extent? AK: No, the economic recession has not at all affected the Indian food processing industry. In fact, we have been growing at the rate of 13.1%, which is much higher than the economic growth of 6%. Even the latest data shows that the Indian food processing industry has been spearheading the economic growth of the country.

B&E: What initiatives are you undertaking to sustain this growth? AK: We are encouraging advanced technologies to utilise the remains and by-products of the food processing industry along with the principal agricultural produce. Further, we are encouraging research and development for the process development and better packaging. This is being supported by infrastructure facilities too.

B&E: But what about providing funds to this promising industry? AK: We have already divided the industry into potential units and we are willing to provide funds as per the requirement, which can even go up to Rs.35 million per unit. We are also providing 75% subsidy for setting up a new unit or modernising an existing one. In fact, we have de-centralised the process because it’s not possible for every farmer or investor to come to Delhi to apply for the subsidy. Excise duty on several commodities has also been reduced.

There are many who have not only been able to beat the pants off competition in this slowdown, but are also popping the bubbly. Who cares if the playing field for them happens to be US – the place that’s facing the maximum brunt! From McDonalds to Wal-Mart and from Abbott to Kraft the list continues to go on.

So, while retailers across the globe have suffered from big drops in consumer spending, Wal-Mart continues to lure millions of consumers ever day. Wal-Mart has surged ahead of rivals, posting a net profit of $13.4 billion in the last 12 months (till March 31, 2009), a 5.4% rise yoy. Even McDonalds is holding onto its consumers and showing growth. Boosted by strong worldwide sales, its earnings for 2008 rose 86% to $4.3 billion. US drug-maker Abbott’s first-quarter sales this year soared by 16% to $6.71 billion. Even for the year ending December 31, 2008, Abbott posted a whopping 33.33% rise in net profit to reach $4.8 billion. While the financial services sector is among the worst affected, California-based Silicon Valley Bank is one that has weathered the storm better than its larger counterparts. Its total loans hit a record $4 billion last year, and Q3 deposits grew 18% yoy to $4.8 billion. Sales for US-based food & beverage giant Kraft’s boxed mac-and-cheese rose to $193.1 million in the first quarter of 2009, a 10% growth over the previous year. So, whether it’s by capitalising on their basic strengths or by being in the right businesses, which sell products and services related to basic necessities, these companies are witnessing surprisingly big upturns. Now that’s what they call, a sight for sore eyes!

Taken together, these steps address the core problems – the stigma associated in the past with IMF conditionality, the availability of early pre-crisis financing, and the overall size of rescue packages – that have sometimes diminished the effectiveness of the Fund’s role as a crisis lender. Emerging markets that approach the IMF early on for pre-crisis financing will find shelter from the winds of global deleveraging, which in turn will help contain the spread of the crisis.

The IMF has already moved quickly to help many of our member countries in this time of crisis, including by protecting social spending in order to cushion the impact of the crisis on the most vulnerable. The lending reforms adopted will enable IMF to be even more flexible and responsive in assisting more countries.

At the same time, these reforms are only a part of a much larger plan for IMF renewal. Still in the pipeline are initiatives to increase concessional lending to low-income countries hit by the crisis, to strengthen the Fund’s surveillance and early warning capacity, and to improve its governance structure in ways that recognise the larger role of emerging-market countries in the world economy.

Would electric shocks be next?

After witnessing the shocking incident of a teacher severely beating up students in Delhi, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has decided to start providing a special training programme on human rights education to teachers. It’s an incident not only just happening in Delhi Municipal Corporation schools but also schools all across the country irrespective of whether they are private or government run. There are several such news items carried by local or national level newspapers, of children severely beaten up by teachers, and even hospitalised. This kind of violence in classrooms among students and teachers is sadly rapidly increasing and to that effect, it is highly commendable and creditable that a council, that is generally considered the hallmark of a lackadaisical institution, has urgently brought into action the above mentioned human rights programme.

One hopes this initiative is immediately replicated across India. According to the NCERT, the lack of sufficiently trained teachers and the teacher training course are the main causes behind violence within classrooms. NCERT is now also planning to make such training more practical instead of theoretical. Consequently, the duration of the B.Ed course is proposed to be increased to two years instead of the present one. The number of primary schools in India is around 650,000. Although in the 11th Five Year Plan, the government has decided to spend Rs.31,200 crores on various skill development programs across all primary and secondary teachers, it is still unclear how much money will be channelised for soft skill development. But still, seeing that the Central Government has been spending just around Rs 9 crores for various training purposes annually, the new figures is dramatically proactive and positive towards addressing the issue.

Human rights education in itself will be a key way of developing awareness of discrimination; it also could be conveniently integrated as a part of the current social studies curriculum. What remains unfulfilled is the setting up of a quasi-judicial national commission specifically for students that could address nationwide student complaints against teachers. Would the government act on this fast or would it wait till students start getting electric shocks?

While these instances show how genuine business interests suffered, crony capitalism was rampant. Tainted Chairman Ramalinga Raju had to, under compulsion of circumstances, admit to the Satyam fraud, while the government failed in terms of improving corporate governance standards! And while exporters in other sectors suffered, the IT sector was quick to pounce on the government to extend their 10-year tax holiday (in existence since 1999) to March 2010. As the aviation sector began to boom, players like Kingfisher & Jet were quick to expand routes and go shopping for aircrafts without understanding what lay ahead. As their costs began to soar due to the ATF price hike, these players were quick to cry foul, as their balance sheets threatened to bleed into oblivion. Jet created a lot of drama as it retrenched and later brought back some 850 employees last year when the government promised to help. But after the government enforced drastic cuts in ATF prices, airlines in fact developed cold feet initially when it came to reducing ticket prices. More recently, when RBI started cutting interest rates, and looked towards the banks to follow the lead, it only got a “Who, me?” expression in return!

UPA missed a great opportunity to make Indian companies world beaters. Rather, much remains the same or even worse after the UPA touch. And if Indian business has actually delivered in these years (at least before the slowdown), this government can claim little credit.

Safexpress has no plans to go international. Kanaujia believes that “India has a huge untapped potential and there’s no reason to go international before we can get hold of the Indian market.” But when it comes to handling the foreign competition on the Indian soil, the company seems to be taking it lightly.

“It will take a lot of time for global big names to understand the complex geography and Indian taxation structure,” Kanaujia tells B&E. No doubt the entrance of foreign players will bring fair practices and maturity in the sector, but keeping in mind the big pockets and huge size of players like FedEx, DHL and TNT they surely have the potential of giving Safexpress some sleepless nights going forward. Currently, Safexpress is pretty ‘safe’, since foreign companies cannot enter India without a tie up with local partners, but if the government changes its stance, things could get difficult. Considering the possibility of rough weather if this happens, Safexpress would do well to ensure that it continues to proactively map and adopt global best practices. Besides they might want to consider revving up their courier business too. Though it is a volumes business, it makes sound sense in the form of a strategic risk diversification.

Boardroom drama at Accor questions corporate governance. Should the CEO & Chairman ranks be split?

This is not the first time you would hear of boardroom fights in the name of governance. Such is the situation at Accor Group of hotels today. Chairman Serge Weinberg handed-in his papers on February 24, 2009, losing his ‘ego’logical battle with CEO Gilles Pellison and many on the Board. What’s more, his ‘exit’ decision also saw 5 more ‘goodbye’ letters being handed-in. The other protagonist is Pelisson, who alongwith Weinberg took charge of Accor 3 years back, and matter worked out fine between the two. But then as they say, only change is permanent; change in Chiarmanship and change in boardroom peace. And even Pellison talks about it as he says, “It is also true that three years later, many things have changed...” Then comes the rough part. When Pellison was voted as the CEO & Chairman, Weingberg & his supporters raised questions on corporate governance norms! Supporters of Weinberg even came forward with the claim that ever since Gerard Pellison (Gilles’ uncle) came to power, he had been trying to “fix” his nephew at the top spot. So should the Harvard MBA play the dual role, in tumultous times? Is governance damned at Accor? Well, there are two reasons why shareholders not not worry – one is Pellison’s experience, and the other, research! Pellison has vast experince across sectors, heading companies from Novotel to Euro-Disney and Bouygues Telecom.

Recession hits the World Bank :-)

Surprise surprise, the IMF is now eyeing countries like China, Brazil, Gulf countries, South East Asian countries and India to get some ‘funds’. Though Japan, which has been hit hard by global meltdown, continues to fork out large amounts of money for the IMF and World Bank (Recently, the Japanese government donated a gigantic $100 billion to the IMF), economists say the IMF would still need a minimum of $500 billion to start its ‘good work’ for battered economies globally. Not very strangely, the US and its allies are not in that comfortable a position to offset the additional amount after being severely affected by the global recession. Tier talk even goes of the US ‘guiding’ IMF towards Third World countries for its new loan requirements.

The hope of a more democratic and participative world where today’s influential countries are not necessarily the deciders of global policy, is becoming truer, strangely because of an extremely negative economic condition. The true emergence of multi-lateralism would perchance be proven only after the next few years are past and the IMF & World Bank’s cry wolf constitutional change is tested to the hilt. Till then, let them damn the recession!

BSN: As far as Shopper’s Stop is concerned, right from the very beginning in 1991, the Rahejas handed over the reins of the business to me, to start and run the show. At that time, both youngsters – Ravi and Neil were in college, and by the time they actually came into the business, Shoppers Stop have been a professionally run successful business. The Rahejas do not control the full business, so it is important to have succession planning in place, because if something happens to me, Ravi & Neil won’t come and takeover the business. As far as I am concerned I own just 0.8% of the company.

Chavez lost the vote over a year ago, but has redeemed himself, although there are allegations of his misusing government machinery for the campaign. Socialism will now have a new position and also a stronger hold. What Chavez calls “21st century socialism” now clearly has the support of the people. As much as Chavez’s contribution to the country and its people has been the reason (the poverty figures have fallen in Venezuela from 54 %in 2003 to 26% in 2008), lack of proper leadership in the opposition has also made things easier for him.

But then, the future will not be very easy for Chavez as much as it seems to him. Despite the current victory, opinion polls have suggested that people are actually against his getting re-elected. While his recent win does put a question mark on how much reliable these opinion polls are, it can’t be denied that Chavez is sitting at the helm of all the activities in Venezuela. The reduction in poverty and all the economic growth that Chavez talks about has been possible because of the high rate of Venezuelan oil in the market and the way he has given Venezuelans equitable share of the oil bounty. Now that the prices have fallen from $90 last year to below $40, it would be tough for Chavez to go with his economic talk.

We head off down Panchsheel Marg, one of New Delhi’s main streets. The ladies want to show me something. The US Embassy and the Chinese Embassy are both located on Panchsheel, directly across from each other. They asked me to check out the rooftops of each embassy. What do I notice? Let’s see... The US Embassy’s roof is loaded with antennae and listening gear. The Chinese Embassy’s roof is loaded with... new Chinese-made solar water heaters. You couldn’t make this up.

But trying to do something about it was just one of many reasons my hosts, Caroline Howe, 23, a mechanical engineer on leave from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and Alexis Ringwald, a Fulbright scholar in India and now a solar entrepreneur, joined with Kartikeya Singh, who was starting the Indian Youth Climate Network, or IYCN, to connect young climate leaders in India; a country coming under increasing global pressure to manage its carbon footprint. “India is full of climate innovators, so spread out across this huge country that many people don’t get to see that these solutions are working right now,” said Howe.

“We wanted to find a way to bring people together around existing solutions to inspire more action and more innovation. There’s no time left to just talk about the problem.”

Koushik Chatterjee, the Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO), bestowed with the overall responsibilities for group financial reporting, Investor Relations, financing strategy inclusive of debt and equity raising, corporate M&A, risk management & compliance, taxation strategy & planning and co-ordination of statutory and management reporting might just prove to be the right candidate for the job. Chatterjee has been the calculating brain behind the acquisition of the Anglo-Dutch steel-maker.
