The Pak puzzle, the ICC World Twenty20...finds out Tareque Laskar.....

Caught in diplomatic crossfire and complicated contract bureaucracy that deprived them of a crack at IPL 2, the Pakistani cricketers seem to be quietly steeling themselves to make a big impact at the ICC World Twenty20...finds out Tareque Laskar

As we wind down the second season of the Indian Premier League, John Buchanan and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) seem to have become the butt of every T20 joke in town. However, Buchanan’s observation that KKR missed the services of Umar Gul ("I suppose the answer is yes”, said Buchanan when asked whether he missed the Pakistani players in the side) is not something to snigger at. It touches a raw nerve, an issue that has otherwise been drowned in the din of crass commercialism that has been IPL 2 – has the IPL shortchanged the players from Pakistan? What does the player in question, Umar Gul, think? He told TSI, “When you look at it from outside the box, it does look like it is discriminatory as all other countries are there but no Pakistani even though they were some of the most popular and best performers last time out.” Gul has a point as anyone who saw what Sohail Tanvir brought to the table for the Rajasthan Royals the last time will agree. After the Pakistan government forbade the players from travelling to India for the tournament, the players were left out in the cold by the time the IPL shifted to South Africa as the IPL had already suspended or cancelled the players’ contracts.

There seems to be a perfect storm brewing that could wreck cricket in Pakistan. Indo-Pak relations are at an ebb so low that sporting ties between the two have all but snapped. The Lahore attack on the Sri Lankan squad has pretty much shattered the last remaining veneer of any possibility of cricket not being a terror target in Pakistan. And then finally the cancellation of Pakistan as a venue for the 2011 ICC World Cup and the IPL 2 snub has been the last straw. Pakistan, since then have been reduced to playing ‘home’ series in the Middle East, and some of the players licking their wounds after being rather abruptly left out of the cricket extravaganza that is the IPL. Ask Yaseer Hameed, whose name was part of the IPL 2 auction before it was pulled out and he laments, “I was looking forward to maybe having a chance to play in such a cosmopolitan atmosphere and I would say it's one of the best and most enjoyable places to play cricket in, so being deprived of that is disappointing. I think cricket should be kept separate from politics so no, I don’t think it was fair to keep the Pakistani players out.” Salman Butt seconds the opinion but concedes that “decisions were taken by both governments which is (at) a higher level than us”. Said former cricketer and politician Kirti Azad to TSI, “When we want to have good political and social relations, we definitely want to invite people from other countries. But Pakistan is a different case. We've been playing cricket with them for a very long time, but one can't isolate political matters in this. The Kargil war happened and then there were Mumbai blasts which has evidences of Pakistan having a hand. So these things have to be kept in mind even when it is sports. So it was a fair decision to not include the Pakistani players.”
