Rethinking and reworking the restrictive immigration policy

This century undoubtedly belongs to the ethnic groups. Non-resident Indians, Chinese, Japanese and Israelis have progressed much to make their home country proud of. There is no question about their potential but the contribution by the host countries in their success can't be overlooked.

There have always been mixed reactions when it comes to immigration. While developing or underdeveloped countries see it as an opportunity, most of the developed countries remain skeptical as the emergence of it increases the fear of jobs loss, wealth and power in the domestic market. In spite of this, some of these countries are gradually becoming havens for immigrants. The US tops this list. Since 2000, the US has accept over a million immigrants annually double than the combined accepted applications by the next top nine countries. Despite the numerous challenges on the front of national security, terrorism, ethnic and regional sensitivity, US has granted legal residence to over 1.27 million foreigners in 2006, making the total number touch a figure of 37.5 million. The country has a rich tradition of welcoming foreigners, even former President Bill Clinton praised and acknowledged the contribution of foreign-born people. In return, Israelis, Indians, Japanese and Chinese have made their mark in business, trade and other professions. The next in line is the UK. The 2001 Census report of UK says that over 4.9 million people were foreign born. As per the government statistics, over 154,095 were given citizenship in 2006. The UK ha many people from Asia, Africa or Latin America who dominate the lists of billionaires and biggest corporations. Canada is another country who has been kind towards immigrants. It has the highest per capita immigration rate in the world. Australia too is quite an attractive destination for immigration.

Though Europe receives the highest number of foreigners, and most of them are from intra-European countries. Only a few West European countries like Spain, Germany are open towards foreigners. Middle East may rank 2nd in numbers but it stands at the bottom when it comes to uplifting or taking care of the immigrants while contributions of immigrants from countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan in their economies are huge. Example of Japan depicts a very shameful picture. Japan has 1.2 million of its people in the US and they contribute to a considerable portion of its income. But it had accepted only 305 refugees till 2002. More recently, the number has increased slightly but remarks from its former Prime Minister defending it as 'one race country' is horrifying.

All in all, immigrants have prospered along with the host country. So the advanced and liberal policy towards immigration by a few developed countries has helped both, while conservative and speculative policy by others does not seem to have helped them much. Why then is their a restriction in their freedom of movement?
