• Over the last quarter, the RBI has infused over Rs.3,200 billion into the financial system, thereby ensuring a comfortable liquidity position; yet Indian banks are apprehensive as far as lending is concerned. With liquidity being no more a concern for bankers, it’s the risk perception (credit risk and economic slowdown) that is preventing them from extending loans. “It is the pessimism on the part of several banks which is preventing them” says Soumendra Dash, Chief Economist CARE. Though both credit (24-25%) and deposit (21-22%) continue to grow above RBI’s expectation of 20%; but in reality the banks are earning a negative spread between their deposits and investment in government securities. So, rather than bringing in confidence and optimism to the Indian economy at this critical juncture, they are in fact contributing more to SLR.
