The outlook for 2009 is not very good, with slowing consumer demand across key categories like flat screen TVs, mobile phones, et al. LG’s mobile communications division, digital appliances and digital displays division have all come under margin pressure and face the prospect of cutting edge price wars, that would remind them of their red ocean days. Of course, global recession has been a big shark in the condescending blue ocean that LG was traversing.

Fortunately, LG is one giant that is not (at least till date) contemplating massive job cuts. But critically, experts now comment that LG’s blue ocean approach was and is simply an escape route to exit troubled businesses and geographies under the guise of a grandiose strategy. Foxed we were, and to understand how LG’s strategy is faring up closer home, we undertook a visit to the LG’s headquarters in India. After all, India ranks among LG’s favourite markets... doesn’t it?

That lead to him becoming Intel’s fourth President in 1997 and CEO in 1998. His final accomplishment at Intel came in 2005 when he was pronounced the Chairman of the Intel Board. So what does Barrett deserve credit for? Most experts and industrialists applaud his efforts for steering Intel clean and healthy through the ‘dot-com’ bust during the turn of the century. He is also the brains behind Intel’s “copy exactly” process which Intel adopted full scale in 1996, and which was responsible for uniformity in facilities setup, increased economies of scale through viable output, more efficient logistics and improved yields. “Craig has had a very distinguished career at Intel.

Were bailouts given to secure fat bonuses?

USA Today wrote about ‘The AIG effect’: Executives finding ways to spend more discreetly. More than a disappointed parent, they need a special prosecutor. Anyone who gave bonuses after accepting federal aid should be fired, and that money should be disgorged to the Treasury. Claire McCaskill popped out a bill to limit the pay of anyone at firms taking federal money to no more than the President makes – $400,000. She said on the Senate floor, “You can’t use taxpayer money to pay out $18 billion in bonuses. And they owe us something other than a fancy wastebasket and $50 million jet.” One Obama official said her idea is catchy, but it won’t work “because no one would come to the Treasury to participate, and that means our economy would continue to stumble downward.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley urged the administration to snatch back the bonuses. The Republican told me, “If this were Japan & a corporate executive did what is being done on Wall Street, they’d either commit suicide or go before the board and the country & apologise.” He was shocked to learn that the Office of Management and Budget, insistent on following the Paperwork Reduction Act, was dragging down a special inspector general’s investigation of what banks are doing with taxpayer money. Aren’t the taxpayers shareholders in these corporations now, and can’t shareholders sue or scream “You misspent my money!” like Judy Holliday? “In The Solid Gold Cadillac,” said Frank, who knows the movie.

Traditionally, a lobbyist is defined as a person who tries to influence legislation in favour of a group interest. In spite of criticism, the American democracy has given a special focus on lobbying by passing resolutions to protect the interests of specific moneyed individuals [eg. Saudi King Abdullah], groups [eg. tobacco companies] and communities [eg. Jews] in mind since 1995. Since then, lobbying has also joined the club of a profitable industry. According to Center for Congressional and Presidential studies, America spent around $2.13 billion on lobbying in 2004 alone and there currently are as many as 1,50,000 people involved in the industry. And the malaise, if you can call it that, is not limited to corporations. The Center for Public Integrity reveals that over 300 universities have spent over $132 million in the last six years while 1,400 local governments have spent $357 million to seek favours from the government. Europe witnessed the emergence of lobbying as early as 1979 during the first European parliamentary election. In Brussels alone, there are 1,400 lobbyists and over 2,600 ‘special interest groups’. The legal lobbying industry in UK is estimated to be worth $1.9 billion, employing over 14,000 people – in fact, a few MPs are often approached [read ‘physically spammed’] more than a hundred times per week by lobbyists. With time, lobbying has expanded its roots across borders.

But then isn’t it the auditor’s responsibility to be the whistle-blower to the company’s wrongdoings? However, some say that book of accounts is the primary responsibility of the management and auditors merely audit the documents provided to them by the management and give their opinion based on accounts. If so, then why on earth does someone need an independent, external auditor?

‘Preface to Standards on Auditing’ available with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), says very clearly, “It (auditing) is undertaken to enhance the degree of confidence of intended users in the financial statements.” It also adds, “In conducting an audit, the overall objective of the auditor is to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatement.”

Now considering the case of Satyam, some may say it was actually the responsibility of the management, but Ved Jain, President, ICAI counters that view, “It is impossible that a fraud of such magnitude would have escaped the auditor’s eyes.” This definitely raises a question mark on the prudence, competence and honesty of auditors operating in India.

The definition of self-employment takes a new meaning in India!

Who’s the No.1 self-employed?

Around one-third self-employed Indians trade in the field of agriculture and around two-thirds of self-employed rural workers in non-agriculture. But in the urban areas, non-agriculture self-employment is more. Apart from these, data suggests that in rural India, around 10% of male workers and more than 25% of female workers would be satisfied with monthly incomes of less than Rs.1,000, much below the poverty line.

NSSO claims most self-employed workers are occupied in continuous, rigorous, but low productivity work that provides little compensation. Might we suggest perhaps they’re referring to the most ‘entrepreneurial’ Indian begging community? This data is clearly a pathetic reflection of the Indian State’s failure to create jobs, discover employability and institutionalise skill development. It is too saddening to know that the massive number of illiterate people in India [arguably between 300 to 400 million] finally are ridiculously considered ‘self-employed’ and a mere part of a national statistic. Dumb is what dumb gets...

A brief history of character!

Beside these two war-oriented initiatives, the US also proved its competence in the field of science, technology and arts. This is evident by the number of Nobel Prizes that Americans grabbed – a jaw dropping 309 since 1906 [an average of 3 prizes per year] making it the top contestant in the race. America also developed remarkable institutions of higher learning [Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Yale] giving depth to what ivy league defined. Perchance the most appreciable move was the development of a society that redefined the meaning of melting pot. From the criminally racist days of Cassius Clay, most of US transformed uniquely to welcome all ethnic groups, religions and races.

Today, however, the scenario seems different and of course bleak, and the growing acceptance is that nonfeasance is a major risk to America’s global image. The last ten years have been enough to vividly showcase the scars America has received and encouraged. The Iraq war and the much publicised absence of mass destructive weapons was the key.

• Over the last quarter, the RBI has infused over Rs.3,200 billion into the financial system, thereby ensuring a comfortable liquidity position; yet Indian banks are apprehensive as far as lending is concerned. With liquidity being no more a concern for bankers, it’s the risk perception (credit risk and economic slowdown) that is preventing them from extending loans. “It is the pessimism on the part of several banks which is preventing them” says Soumendra Dash, Chief Economist CARE. Though both credit (24-25%) and deposit (21-22%) continue to grow above RBI’s expectation of 20%; but in reality the banks are earning a negative spread between their deposits and investment in government securities. So, rather than bringing in confidence and optimism to the Indian economy at this critical juncture, they are in fact contributing more to SLR.

On another front, Nigeria has redefined corporate social irresponsibility. Companies like Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron are reaping off the nation’s oil industry but continue showing deliberate negligence to protecting the environment, human life and the locality which have been affected by the gas leakage and flares in their plants or refineries.

Protocols like the Kyoto one are more stupidly chivalrous rather than being autocratically (and logically) regulatory. International agencies have to necessarily regulate MNCs with an iron hand, than play to the lobby gallery.

Not surprisingly, while annual sales have regularly fallen or remained stagnant at GM (2006: $205 billion sales; 2007: $181 billion; 2008 six months: $80.6 billion) and Ford (2006: $160 billion; 2007: $172 billion; 2008 six months: $85 billion), the sales at Toyota (2006: $179 billion; 2007: $202 billion; 2008 six months: $118 billion) and Honda (2006: $84 billion; 2007: $94 billion; 2008 six months: $54 billion) have been constantly rising. But more importantly, companies like Toyota and Honda have raked up humungous profits year after year! Toyota had profits of $11.6 billion, $14 billion and $6.18 billion in 2006, 2007 and the first six months of 2008. While Honda, during the same periods, had profits of $5 billion, $5 billion and close to $2 billion!

Compared to the accumulated profits of $44 billion in the last three years of the fuel-efficient focused Japanese Big 2, the Detroit Big 2 had accumulated losses of a mind numbing $82 billion!!! What gives?!?! That’s when I came across four extremely critical issues that could surely define the reasons why the global auto industry dies sooner than later...

Many more icons of corporate America tumbled, exposed as cheats and frauds. The beginning of the Bush presidency was marked by an unprecedented financial crisis. And then came 9/11 and the entire attention of the world shifted to Afghanistan and Pakistan as the War on Terror (Bush called it a ‘crusade’) was launched.

Bush is about to end his term. And what do we have? Top administration officials flailing that the epicenter of the War on Terror is not (and probably never was) Iraq, but Afghanistan and Pakistan! And of course, just as the twin towers imploded in 2001, Wall Street is imploding in 2008. The most powerful symbols of American capitalism, the Twin Towers, were destroyed in 9/11. The most arrogant symbol of American capitalism, Wall Street has been barely saved from destruction by the most capitalistic nation on earth suddenly behaving like the most ‘socialist’! Let’s face it, George Bush has just ‘nationalised’ the largest American insurance company AIG, just as Indira Gandhi had done in her heydays.

Entrepreneurship involves the reverse of alienating, and it makes you realise that the real gold and real assets are not share certificates, but the people who work with you.

And let me assure you, the value of your sweat never disappears. It’s only when you want to speculate on someone else’s sweat and make overnight riches, and when everyone joins in the same group-think, that the value system suddenly evaporates... and then it takes years for that sweat of the real workers and entrepreneurs to build it up again. Finally, I should want to end with the same words with which I had ended my February 3, 2008, edit... If you still have to invest in stock markets, it would be good for you to become friends with the term ‘shock market’!!!

The eventual outcome was two-fold. One, it ensured that the time-tested Congress alliance in the cow-belt was broken. Since 1989 till present, Congress has never won an election in these two states. Two, it wiped out upper caste politicians, irrespective of which party came to power. The Brahman – the most dominant force in Hindi-speaking states – has been wholly marginalised in favour of a formidable Backward caste-Dalit-Muslim alliance. The Congress, in the absence of Uttar Pradesh, is no longer the force it used to be and despite the best efforts of Sonia Gandhi to revive the party in the state, the post-Mandal alliances are proving just too difficult to dislodge.

But there was something else that Singh did, which posterity may not forgive. By making Mufti Mohammed Sayeed as his Union Home Minister, and the infamous Rubaiyya Sayeed kidnapping fiasco that followed in the wake, exposed the country for the first time to the specter of terrorist blackmail. By caving in shamelessly, extremists discovered a vital chink in the Indian armour: kidnapping for barter since then has became a norm, finding its apotheosis in the disgraceful Kandahar hijack of December 1999.

Close V. P. Singh aide & former Rajya Sabha MP, Wasim Ahmed, told B&E: “Singh was a true raja. What he has done for the empowerment of the poor in India, nobody else did.” Not too many in the upwardly mobile classes in the country may agree to such a formulation, but again history is hardly bothered about that.
