Commercial space is severely affected in terms of transaction magnitudes, while residential is hit in terms of numbers. Residential townships will attract the highest number of domestic and international investors, since these represent a high-demand segment with assured future sale numbers.

News reports suggest that NRIs have stopped investing money in Indian realty. What is the reason?
The primary driver for Indian residential real estate is domestic demand. However, NRI demand in this sector is also of some magnitude. Both domestic and NRI demand has reduced at the individual mid-income housing level. However, commercial real estate has been impacted more significantly, due to the reduction in demand from the IT/ITeS sector. Moreover, NRI participation in Indian real estate projects is still quite notable – in fact, their contributions account for almost 20% of the total project investments.
