The 100th year of Mills & Boon brings more spiced-up sweet nothings!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Sweet dreams are made of these…

This sense of predictability gradually made me drift away from M&Bs, which brings me to the question – do these novels only appeal to girls of a particular age group? “Well, there might be a possibility,” says Sakshi, who is 27 but still hasn’t shed the M&B fixation. “During my teens M&B was perpetually the topic of discussion. Although I graduated to other kinds of reading but I don’t think I can give up M&B. I still have a few of them by my bedside and I just don’t mind escaping from reality and visiting that dream world whenever I have the time.” And on enquiring about the reaction that she invites on revealing that she still is a die hard M&Bs fan, Sakshi concedes, “You know, there will always be those who would denigrate these novels and you would always get criticism from them. It’s true that M&Bs are popular only among a certain age group but I’m also sure that there will always be those who enjoy it, regardless of their age.”

On the completion of its 100th year, with its sales figures assuring the presence of plentiful readers, Mills & Boon promises to transform and bring to you more spice and sparks within those pages. So women, those intense intimate moments which would end with a sensual kiss and perhaps a little more, would now transcend to the next level… So, till you pick up the next series of the new Mills & Boon, let me just leave it for your imagination to take over!

The men who could be Buffett’s successors...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Warren's Knights 9

Now this fact generates interest as it hints that Nicely is going to stick around with Berkshire Hathaway for much longer than one could even imagine, a scoring point on Buffett’s admiration list, isn’t it? Buffett agrees completely in 2007’s annual report, “GEICO possesses the widest moat of any of our insurers, one carefully protected and expanded by Tony Nicely, its CEO. Tony, now 64, joined GEICO at 18. Even now, with sales at $12 billion, Tony feels GEICO is just getting started. So do I.”

Certainly the ‘no ego’ man is extremely passionate about his work, as Tony’s favourite hobby is ‘GEICO’ and the rest follows. According to Tony, his CEO job is the best in the world and why not when he has been strongly associated with Berkshire for almost 13 years now and GEICO for more than four decades, transforming (since its inception as a part of Berkshire Hathaway in 1995) it from an almost bankrupt insurance company of the mid-70s to the largest auto-insurer of four states in the US and quite at the top in many other states by 2008.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Warren quoted a few years back to media, “The truth is that I’ve got all my net worth safely in Berkshire and I will never sell a share...” B&E did some simple calculations to find out the bloody hits Warren’s personal net worth itself has taken. His 32.68% in Berkshire was at a high of $70.61 billion in February 2008. The figure now is $57.2 billion, a plunging neckline fall of around $13 billion! While unused, uninvested and therefore useless billion dollar cash reserves by themselves are a huge issue of concern, the falling levels of such reserves also point down under. And in that context, Berkshire itself seems to be bleeding cash. It has seen one of the biggest annual reductions in cash reserves in the past year. Its cash reserves plummeted to $33.37 billion on September 30, 2008, down from a huge $44.33 billion at the end of 2007.

Wait, watch and be an opportunist!

Which are the worst hit segments? And which segments, you think, will attract more buyers in future?
Commercial space is severely affected in terms of transaction magnitudes, while residential is hit in terms of numbers. Residential townships will attract the highest number of domestic and international investors, since these represent a high-demand segment with assured future sale numbers.

News reports suggest that NRIs have stopped investing money in Indian realty. What is the reason?
The primary driver for Indian residential real estate is domestic demand. However, NRI demand in this sector is also of some magnitude. Both domestic and NRI demand has reduced at the individual mid-income housing level. However, commercial real estate has been impacted more significantly, due to the reduction in demand from the IT/ITeS sector. Moreover, NRI participation in Indian real estate projects is still quite notable – in fact, their contributions account for almost 20% of the total project investments.

Don’t get us wrong Eli!

Haddad, expectably, is quite ecstatic to begin his stint in the Indian market, as he goes on to say, “I am delighted with my venture with Spencer’s... I’m sure that BHPC will soon emerge to be an affordable fashionable brand for urban Indians seeking the international feel and look.” And the emphasis on the word “affordable” is quite apparent, which means he fully understands the pulse of an Indian consumer.

But has it been the growing Indian economy and the rising disposable income in the hands of the Indian consumer that has attracted him to start business here? He is quick to refute any such reason and quips (diplomatically), “The Indian consumer has an incredible feel for fashion. And to me, that sense of fashion and the sense of expressing themselves are a great fit for Beverly Hills Polo Club brand here in India.” During the course of our conversation, Haddad admits candidly that he does not patronise the idea of outsourcing the ground research work before entering a new market, “I myself researched on the demographics and lifestyles of Indians for more than a year and then decided to enter this market.” And it was this research that made him realise that Indians really want to express themselves by the way of their clothing; and that they want to be individuals with their own style statement. “If I can fulfill their aspirations of enhancing their style statement through the BHPC brand, I will consider my venture successful.” He also professes that he is an eternal optimist and is sure that the gloomy Indian economy will soon rebound.

Motherlode of all disasters...

The bygone paras makes clear the fact that India is amongst the worst performers when it comes to environmental protection and reducing human vulnerability due to environmental hazards. India is one of the world’s top 10 CO2 emitters, contributing to 4.23% of world’s CO2 emission. India is solely dependent on agriculture and agriculture in India is totally dependent on monsoon rain. During summer it is the south-westerly winds and in winter it is the westerly winds that bring rainfall. However, scientists believe that westerly winds have already been disrupted. Research shows that 60% of India’s arable land is already affected by soil erosion. Though India has a substantial area of forest land, half of this is concentrated in Madhya Pradesh and seven North-Eastern states which are also currently experiencing rapid forest area coverage loss. Studies forecast that global warming will have severe impact on countries like India. The Indian Agricultural Research Institute has warned that an increase in temperature by just 3 degree centigrade will cause 15-20% decline in wheat production. Moreover, such a temperature increase will lead to wiping out of the Himalayan glaciers, thereby posing a big threat to rivers like Indus, Ganges et al.

All in all, India doesn’t have concrete policy for environment protection but o\we are finally showing some interest on the issue, and though he has formed one panel comprising scientists, politicians, business tycoons and bureaucrats, they are yet to meet up. Really, we need to save India to save Indians... and we’re not joking!

It is surprising that the government is being held responsible foAdd Imager economic ills today

One of the most remarkable features of the India of this decade is the manner in which its economy has insulated itself from its politics. World over, analysts have been admiring the neat compartmentalization between the economy and the politics of India. The last time political decision making caused a downturn in the growth story was when the unfortunate nuclear tests were carried out as India flexed its muscles at the world. That was when we saw slowdown in growth, a decline in investments and a downslide in industrial confidence. But since then, no political event has affected growth, not even the shameful incidents in Gujarat. Nor the surprising election results that saw a shining government fall and get replaced by an unlikely and tumultuous coalition that saw the left parties supporting a reformist government. In fact, in the last four years, India has averaged a growth rate of 9%, something we have only seen China do in modern times, where the political and the economic agenda are the same.

There is faint suspicion that this year seems to have reversed the trend. Ironically, the same people who argued that politics and economics in India are divorced, have started blaming the government for the economic situation. High inflation, oil prices, the rise and fall of the rupee and the trade deficit. In a market economy that is growing at a fast pace, it is axiomatic that there will be some inflation. Inflation at 11.5% is undoubtedly high and does affect the poor, but is not surprising and cannot be blamed on the government of the day. There are global food shortages, market imperfections and domestic seasonal fluctuations that do cause food prices to go up. But these cannot be tackled with hikes in interest rates, which is the only significant option a government has today when pressurized to act. Imports don’t help when world prices are high, banning exports amounts to penalizing the farmer just when he is looking forward to some gains from high prices. On petrol and diesel again, what role does a domestic government have when crude prices keep going upwards? Subsidies can be given but beyond a point will come back to haunt everyone through high taxes and deficits.

Shoot the damned Americans!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

America’s shattering dream has compounded problems for the Indian economy. virat bahri of B&E analyses the fall out of the crisis and the near term outlook

Seeing how all this is panning out, we Indians (and of course all the other affected countries) should now be demanding voting rights to veto the US President whenever he passes another policy initiative that puts the wind behind the sails of the splurging Americans in future… This may sound a tad too ambitious, considering how little we can do about the state of affairs in our own country. But look at what a horde of over ambitious individuals with inflated egos to feed and credit cards to recklessly flaunt, coupled with banks that threw caution to the wind, regulators that did anything but regulate, and a government that itself desperately needs fiscal discipline training, have done to us! And literally no economy has been spared, India included. Only the degree varies, depending on how lucky (read: decoupled) you are with US & the EU.

Indeed, the direct impact has been very minimal if we think about banks. After all, our Indian banks are ‘laymen’ compared to the likes of ‘Lehman’ Brothers in risk taking, more so due to a cautious RBI, which, in retrospect, is a good thing of course. The panic was largely felt in the case of ICICI Bank & Bank of Baroda, whose exposure to the toxic securities was a cause of real concern. ICICI declared an exposure of $80 million and that it needed to make a provision of around $28 million.

However there are many ways the US crisis has made matters difficult for Indian banks, and has also put the entire economy in a bit of a quagmire. The most visible impact has been on the Sensex (8,023 at the time of writing); as FIIs, faced with a devastating credit crunch back home have scurried to withdraw their money; and they have sold over $10 billion worth of stocks this year so far; which has been devastating, in turn for the rupee which, by October 23, was flirting with the 50 mark to the dollar.

Despite some government assistance, further consolidation seems imminent

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Flying isn’t all that easy!

, an optimistic Binit Somaia, Director, Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation doesn’t see cause for alarm as he asserts, “This alliance will rationalise capacity and in turn should improve the financial performance of all players. There will be an increase in prices, but fare increase and higher load factors will improve the health of the industry.” Moreover, Spicejet is also looking to synergise with any of the low cost carriers in the country; primarily GoAir or Indigo, in order to cut down on costs. And the result of Jet’s decision to cut 1900 jobs is not hidden from anyone now, as the airline was forced to reinstate the sacked employees a day after. Clearly, these aviation majors are making every possible effort at their end to sustain in these bad times; but till now, every effort has unfortunately failed to remove the red ink.

An excerpt from Warren Buffet’s letter to its shareholders is relevant even for our aviation sector, as he said, “The airline industry’s demand for capital ever since that first flight has been insatiable. Investors have poured money into a bottomless pit, attracted by growth when they should have been repelled by it.” But you will easily find players still optimistic on growth and consider this period only as a temporary blip. But as far as trends go, the bottom seems nowhere in sight w.r.t. the downfall of Indian aviation. And we can only see consolidation, and more consolidation, in the offing.

Its infrastructural and industrial arms (which contributed to 45.2% of revenue & 36.6% of earnings during 2007) are still its forte.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Time and again, many experts have opined that GE’s earnings are stable, year after year and that Wall Street likes a company that is more stable in meeting forecasts. Yet, what they missed out was that fact that it was GE Capital (whose financials are separately filed with the SEC) which was the well of capital for GE. So if GE’s earnings were either missing or over achieving set targets, there would be a ‘legal’ funds transfer between the entities. Now with GE Capital in deep trouble, the time for this stable ship to face reality is here. Troubles galore for a hero to thrive indeed. But is Immelt up to it? Well, all’s not lost yet, and his options are not few. However, he’s got to act fast. So what can Immelt do to guarantee his crew and passengers that ‘Titanic’ is not used as a metaphor for ‘GE’ in future business case studies?

First, the finance arm. GE has known to be a stable giant alright, and thankfully most (more than 54%) of its earnings in 2007 were earned from sectors that have always been a part of GE’s core game for decades. Its infrastructural and industrial arms (which contributed to 45.2% of revenue & 36.6% of earnings during 2007) are still its forte. Be it electrical equipment, energy, aviation, oil and gas or the services market, GE has been the frontrunner in this segment. Jet engines, drilling equipment, sensors, power controls and turbines et al, are categories whose demand will remain stable amongst the corporate community for very long. It should therefore strengthen its core business and expand further to achieve greater economies of scale in this regard.

Then comes its healthcare business which is making good grounds, especially considering that it is a sector which is virtually immune to any economic downturn. People will still fall ill, boom or crash! This segment which made 10.2% of its revenues last year is still a great bet for a widely-diversified GE future. The same rule applies to its media arm, downturn or no downturn. Yet what ails the Healthcare and the media division respectively is its link to the Capital arm.

Obviously, the aristocrats are trying their time this time in encouraging riots in rightist regions, as has the US all the past years.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Look at how a communist South America performs on the HDI as compared to, say, a capitalist India or South Africa, both featured on the over hyped BRICS report. While India ranks a lowly 128 and South Africa 121 on the HDI, Bolivia is at 117, Brazil is 70, Cuba is 51 and Uruguay is 46! What to talk about quasi-dictatorship communist nations Russia, which is at 67 and China, which is at 81! Communism seems to be working big time, and fantastically better than the blind market-force driven capitalism! Supportingly, Cuban Ambassador to India, Miguel Angel Ramirez, shares with B&E, “People in socialist countries of South America are not against the American people. They oppose the neoliberal policies of the US government.”

Even in Bolivia, poverty has continued through the years because of the 500 year past colonial rule and the past century’s monopoly power control by the aristocratic whites, who constituted only 15% of the population, yet monopolised all the natural resources and moneys of the nation – one reason that brought the first indigenous President Morales to power with a superb majority and one reason why Morales, following his hero Chavez’s footsteps, nationalised in one go all of the nation’s gas reserves. Obviously, the aristocrats are trying their time this time in encouraging riots in rightist regions, as has the US all the past years.

Perhaps the power of the South American Left can be gauged from the party policy statement of Morales, “The worst enemy of humanity is US capitalism.
