Is it a crime to be a religious person, or publish religious books?

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

The ATS, however, was armed with strong evidence nailing the accused, as became abundantly clear when it went to court on November 10. The court was also informed about the hawala transfers of Rs 10.73 lakh that the accused made to procure RDX and various other materials that were used in the blasts. The accused are also said to have organised an arms training camp in Pune’s Sinhadgarh in July/August 2003. Expectedly, Samir Kulkarni’s advocate rubbished the evidence ATS presented and in turn accused the investigators of making “a mountain out of a molehill.” He said as Samir was a trader such money transfers were nothing new to him. When it was suggested that Samir was also involved in publishing and distributing books on the Hindutva ideology, he shot back: “Is it a crime to be a religious person, or publish religious books?”

Outside the court, the president of Abhinav Bharat, Himani Swarkar, was protesting the arrest of these suspects. Himani said the entire “drama” was simply to “balance” Islamist terrorism. “Why does not the Central government hang Afzal Guru? Why is such a fuss being created about the narco test? Why was action not taken against Sharad Pawar or Chaggan Bhujbal when their names were mentioned by Abdul Karim Talgi?” she asked. And then she went on to allege that the ATS was working under political pressure. When the name of Abhinav Bharat cropped up during the investigations, it was given out that there were several organisations by that name. But the president of the Jan Sangharsh Manch and senior advocate of Gujarat High Court, Mukul Sinha, asserted that Sanathan Sansthan was propagating a fascist line.

“Abhinav Bharat, Jan Jagaran Manch and Jan Kalyan Samiti are sister organisations of Sanathan Sansthan and are spreading communalism in the country,” alleged Sinha, and added that the Sansthan was involved in 26 blasts. “I have the evidence,” Sinha claimed.

Though the Indian system does have the virtuous background of arresting many who may be innocent, developments last week do point to a larger conspiracy. A Nashik court has allowed the ATS to question a `high profile' person - reportedly BJP MP, Aditya Avaidhnath, - for his involvement in the larger conspiracy. The Lok Sabha member from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh has challenged the police to arrest him. For forces of law and order, it can only mean bad tidings. Clearly, testing times lie ahead for India's criminal justice system.

It’s time we do more than just look for an easy replacement for American hegemony

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Global Agenda - Who Will Run the World?

The new Obama administration will have only a few months to develop meaningful proposals that can win domestic support, and will be preoccupied with the aftermath of the current financial debacle and the Iraq war. Europe is pushing for ambitious targets but is having trouble with its own vested interests. Negotiation watchers term the current American-Chinese dance of mutual blame a suicide pact. In short, the process is a mess. This is hardly surprising. An inter-governmental system that falls apart under the challenges of trade negotiations and proliferation threats is unlikely to master the deep complexity and multitudinous vested interests that the issue of climate change entails. Traditional diplomacy will at best devise a face-saving but meaningless accord next year.

In many areas, frustration with inter-governmental intransigence and incompetence has sparked extraordinary innovation by non-governmental organizations, corporations, and ordinary people. Private organizations such as the Forest Stewardship Council and the Marine Stewardship Council provide and, increasingly, implement environmental standards where inter-governmental action has failed. Private actors from foundations to pharmaceutical corporations to NGOs are actively experimenting with alternative ways to tackle transnational health challenges. Often governments are part of these experiments – but they are not necessarily the drivers, and progress does not depend on signing treaties.

The big question today is whether all these alternative approaches can add up to more than a bit of desperate tinkering around the edges. Standard international-relations thinking does not even entertain the question, and those conventional ways of seeing the world have blinded us to looking at this crucial question. As a result, we do not yet know the answer. Data remain scarce. Barely a few public-private partnership have been examined to see what good they do. The mishmash of initiatives, actors, campaigns, and appeals create opportunities for major progress – and mass confusion.

If there is to be real progress toward more effective and efficient global governance that can address the unprecedented challenges posed by climate change and the rest of the global agenda, we must do much more than look for an easy replacement for American hegemony. We must figure out how to make sense of this enormous diversity of ways of saving the world.

An island in the ocean

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Japan and China where he’d spent his early years – an island called Okinawa. In the north of this island, on the beach stands a monument that declares to the four winds and the waves the ethos of its people – “At 70, we are mere children and still young at 80; if at 90, the ancestors beckon heavenwards, ask them to wait… for we might consider proceeding only after 100” – an ethos that every Okinawan strives to emulate, for the people here live longer, healthier lives than anywhere on earth. Their average life expectancy is well into the 80s (while India’s hovers around 60 and the United States’ in the mid 70s). More significantly, Okinawans suffer greatly reduced incidences of cancer and coronary heart disease. What fascinated me was Kenshin’s account of a number of nonagenarians and centenarians, both men and woman, who not only live healthy, but in fact, active and vigorous lives… gardening, hiking, swimming and fishing…

I got back home and did some research and here’s what I found out about the Okinawans and their template for living a long, healthy and fulfilling life… here’s what I found out… Diet: A Penguin publication calls the Okinawan diet “the healthiest diet” in the world. They have a low calorie diet that is high in vegetable and fruit content (almost 10 daily servings) high in whole grains, with a generous sprinkling of soy and fish protein, legumes and omega-3 foods (you could get your daily dose from cod-liver oil tablets at the pharmacist’s or if you’re a vegan, wait till you can find some supplements made from sea algae (the primary omega-3 source). And they drink lots of green tea and jasmine tea. Just as importantly, they avoid red meat, junk food, egg yolks, alcohol, tobacco and sweets like the plague.

Exercise: Almost every Okinawan follows an exercise regimen like tai chi or yoga, or at least a regulated physical activity, and in fact becomes more regular and consistent as he grows older.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about them is their belief in ikigai – ‘a sense of purpose that makes one’s life worth living’, and supportive family groups. This sense of purpose and responsibility seems to give them a reason to go on living while many of their counterparts in other latitudes have lost theirs…

And it’s not just the Okinawans, (I had written about the Abkazhians in a previous column), for there are many such communities around the world whose shared values have contributed towards healthier, long-lived communities and families and not just individuals.

So eat right Kakoo; don’t be lazy and please exercise; and share this lifestyle with friends and family and stop worrying about being infirm or lonely… it’s bound to work. Just ask the Okinawans…..

Chandrayaan - a superficial success

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Once again our popular editor is bang on target! With a lot of hue and cry we have launched our Moon mission. We are feeling good. Yeah, we should. But, is it really significant for us? This is the most burning question at this moment. Mr. Editor has covered almost everything to reveal that we ourselves have lowered the status of such a great beginning. Whether it is Chinese syndrome or a pseudo-prestige show, the fact is that we are pretty behind China in almost all aspects. We Indians are really good in celebration. But time has come to go for a post-mortem. We see science as a different area, economics as a different area, history as a different area, culture as a different area, identity as a different area. Then how can we expect to be at the top one day? Unless and until we perfectly blend science in our mindset, how far we can go with an unscientific way of thinking. Chandrayaan is a success for our great scientists, not for our stupid government. Setting our feet in mud we should not dream about the sky. Ground first, moon later! Kudos to TSI and Arindam Chaudhuri for the article.

The Body Sculptor

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

He's the lucky one who gets to lay his hands on the likes of Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, and closer home, John Abraham, and he makes them sweat while at it! Lately credited with fashioning the sizzling hot bods in the upcoming flick 'Dostana', celebrity trainer Mike Ryan bares a fair bit to Neha Sarin in an exclusive conversation…

You have worked with both sports stars and film stars. How different is it dealing with the two?

Not much. When working with athletes and celebrities, it is all about the time frame available to achieve your goal i.e. a desired look for the upcoming role. With athletes, it's the ability to get them bigger, faster and stronger in preparation for the season. Both require very intense training and cardio vascular training with a major focus on nutrition and supplementation. The end result is to have the athletes and the celebrities peaking at the appropriate time for them.

Do you think people want a better looking physique today than they did, say a generation back?

Well, I believe everyone (celebrities, athletes and everyone in between) is always looking to achieve physique perfection. Has the "look" changed from a generation ago, I'd say yes. Back in the 80's – 90's the action movies were dominated by Arnold, Stallone, Van Damme, actors who were larger than life. Muscles were bulging in every direction and the American population loved and was inspired to be like them. In the late 90's and 2000's, actors went for that lean, striated look. It seemed less was more and Brad Pitt's Troy look was the new adoration of fans everywhere. So whether today's physique is better looking now than it was 10 years ago depends entirely on the individual and I'm sure like all things, it will change. Who knows maybe the "twiggy" look of the 60's will reappear, but personally I hope not!

Can training and exercise work for every 'body'? What are the key elements required to make it work?

Yes it can! We all have different goals we want to achieve but the bottom line is exercise will make you healthier, happier and more confident. The key elements required in exercise are resistance training. This is actually weight training with weights, machines, rubber bands, medicine balls etc in which you lift weights to make yourself stronger and more responsive. The second component or key element is cardio-vascular training. This is the act of running, jogging and hiking, in which your heart is working efficiently to help reduce body fat. The third key element is your meals. Weight training and cardio vascular training is almost a waste of time if you’re not going to fuel body with proper nutrition. Meals rich in proteins, carbohydrates and essential fats are excellent. High sugar, high trans fats and as well as greasy and fried foods should be monitored or avoided. Lastly, I firmly believe in supplementation. Everything from a multivitamin to muscle building supplements should be considered when starting an exercise program. Of course only take what will help you in your quest (an avid hiker wouldn't need creatine but a body builder would).

Solutions from Portman

Natalie Portman is quite concerned about world affairs. For one, she has shot a video for YouTube where she pushes the young people supporting Obama to ensure that their parents support him as well, and warns them that they might need more than one conversation for persuading them and hence they should begin on it right away! She has also taken us all by surprise by joining Rashida Jones in jumping about on a bed cuddling pooches and recommending puppies as the solution for the global financial crisis! Let's just say, saving the world is not everyone's forte!

Your party is angry with the functioning of the state bureaucracy as well...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

“If the Cong-SP alliance works, BSP will be finished”

Akhilesh Singh Yadav

Samajwadi Party MP from Kannauj

Have the SP's agitations threatened the government?

Our non-violent protests have been met with brutal lathi charges. Over 250 of our workers were arrested. Many will spend Diwali in jail. This is a dictatorship that violently crushes even the most peaceful protests. For instance, the way Rahulji was treated was shameful.

Your party is angry with the functioning of the state bureaucracy as well...

Mayawati thinks her five years in government will stretch to 50 and that these bureaucrats who are personally serving her will never retire. But governments change, and we are keeping an eye on what is happening. Never before has there been such organised corruption at the highest levels.

Is it not too early to judge a government so harshly?

Except for setting up amusement parks, what else has this government achieved? Dalit-friendly policies such as the Kanya Vidya Dhan that we initiated have been scrapped. Even the DMs and SSPs are working on the directives of BSP workers.

How will an alliance with the Congress help SP?

Alliances happen and break all the time. But if this alliance works the BSP will be finished. You will need a microscope to look for it.

New epoch for syria, lebanon

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Sense of apprehension is prevailing in diplomatic circles

In what may have potential to change the political contours of the West Asia in years to come, Syria and Lebanon are setting up ambassadorial relations for the first time, putting relations between the neighbours on a further equal footing – and delivering Damascus out from its regional seclusion.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and his Lebanese counterpart, Fawzi Salloukh, signed a text beginning the ties in Damascus. The statesmen called for cooperation in foiling terrorist assaults in their respective territories. The signing of the deal comes hours after Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, issued a statement which paved the way for full diplomatic ties.

Syria and Lebanon have not had regular political ties – that entail full reciprocal recognition – since they got their freedom from France six decades ago. Damascus has been by a long way the overriding side since 1976 when her "peacekeeping forces" interceded in Lebanese civil war and had command of Lebanon for nearly 30 years. Moallem meanwhile said that the two sides will establish embassies in each other's capitals before the end of the year and will officially demarcate their border as part of the confidence building measures.

Talking to TSI from Beirut, noted political expert from Al-Safir, Sati-Nur-Al-Din said: “The declaration is in the interest of both nations in the stretched run. It can well be said as a much needed step in the right direction, out of the vortex of uncertainties and apprehensions regarding lucidity and the cold acknowledgment of theoretical interests. Any interruption in the process would lead to a torrent of interventions.”

Syria came under profound Lebanese and global demands to finish its occupation of Lebanon after the 2005 killing of previous Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Many Lebanese held Syria responsible for the assassination of the anti-Syrian lawmaker, but Damascus rebuffs any such role. Naturally, there is a sense of apprehension prevailing in diplomatic circles.

Another expert, Ousama Safa, director of the Lebanese Centre for Policy Studies, told TSI that it was “yet to be seen if it brings real change in Syrian attitude or just a political posturing; a window dressing.”

2015: Indian on the Moon

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

ISRO chief announces what TSI''s Satish Chapparike had said a month ago

On the dawn of Wednesday, October 22, as the Sun rose from the Bay of Bengal near Sriharikota, India took a giant leap in the space. The first Moon Mission of country Chandrayaan-1 was successfully put into the earths orbit on that historic day. Before that when the countdown started at dawn, the ISRO scientific community was a little tense. They all eagerly awaited the outcome of the mission’s first stage. Those 20 minutes from the launch to fixing the lunar orbiter in the earth's orbit was the longest period of their lives. For more than 10 years, the thousand-member Chandrayaan-1 team had worked day and night for India's dream project, and for them that was the D-day.

Some of the world's top space scientists like Prof UR Rao, K Kasturirangan and Space Commission member Roddam Narasimaiah were there in that esteemed gathering. ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair, Project Director M Annadurai and the entire team of Chandrayaan-1 project team members were waiting inside a veritable 'pressure cooker'. Exactly at 06:22, PSLV was fired and carried the 1,380 kg lunar orbiter towards the earth's orbit. Exactly after 18.2 minutes the orbiter was successfully injected into the earth's orbit. Immediately, ISTRAC (ISRO telemetry, tracking and command network) at Peenya and Deep Space Network (DSN) at Byalalu started tracking the spacecraft with a few other tracking centres in the world. Once they started getting the signal from the spacecraft, there was sheer rejoicing all over. The first phase was successful.

Now the trickier and more challenging phase lies ahead. Later, through a series of highly complex manoeuvres, the desired trajectories will be achieved. After circling the earth in its Transfer Orbit, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft will be taken into a more elliptical 'Extended Transfer Orbit' by repeatedly firing its Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) in a pre-determined sequence. Subsequently, the LAM will be fired again to make the spacecraft travel to the vicinity of the moon. When it reaches the vicinity of the moon and passes at a few hundred kilometers from it, its LAM will be fired again, so that the spacecraft slows down sufficiently to enable the gravity of the moon to capture it into an elliptical orbit. Following this, the height of the spacecraft's orbit around the moon is reduced in several steps. After a careful and detailed observation of the orbit perturbations there, the orbital height of Chandrayaan-1 will be finally lowered to 100 km from the lunar surface. Especially this process is a fascinating one. It will be monitored by the Peenya and Byalalu ground stations with the help of other stations spread across the world. This entire process may take another 18 days. After that the Moon Impact Probe will be ejected from Chandrayaan-1 at the earliest opportunity to hit the lunar surface in a chosen area. Later, cameras and other scientific instruments will be turned on and tested. This leads to the operational phase of the mission, which lasts for about two years, during which Chandrayaan-1 explores the lunar surface with its array of instruments. The data will be sent to the ground stations. Within those two years, ISRO wants to explore the entire surface of the moon's dark, frozen side. With that will begin a new era in Indian and as well as world space science, and also the beginning of ‘Moon War’ between India and China.

A cut in time saves...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

In yet another initiative aimed at infusing further liquidity into the system amid discomfiting signs of economic & industrial slowdown, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor D. Subbarao has announced a 100 basis points cut in repo-rate. This will result in lower loan rates for consumer, house, auto and corporate loans. This is the first repo-rate cut after 2003 by the Central Bank. Earlier, RBI injected Rs 1.45 trillion into the system by reducing the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 250 basis points. But banks need to lower their deposit rates also if they want to considerably lower their lending rates. Deposit rates have risen considerably over the past three months. A cut in deposit rates coupled with increased liquidity would help uplift the sagging economy.

Sachin Tendulkar

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

As Sachin Tendulkar prepares to become history''s highest run getter, Satish chapparike weaves an evocative picture of the champ

It was a breezy, balmy October evening. I recall I was walking under the giant Shivaji statue next to Udhyan Ganesh Mandir. The faithful in the temple premises and the Bengal Club were in a festive mood and the Durga Puja pandal shone bright as the sun’s last rays fell on the decorations.

But my own pilgrimage was different – to Mumbai’s historic Shivaji Park. There, in the middle of the grounds, were 30 to 40 cricket nets and over 500 boys in white busy with their classes. For them the lovely evening and the festive spirit everywhere meant nothing. They were all consumed entirely by their bats and balls. The one and only goal of Madhav, Arjun, Samanth, Gokhale and the rest was to bat like 'him'. Like the great Sachin – the son of Marathi novelist Ramesh Tendulkar.

On October 7, two days before the start of the Bangalore Test, Shivaji Park was abuzz with anecdotes celebrating the master blaster's world record. Would he now subdue Brian Lara in the Bangalore Test? And if not there, then in the second Test at Mohali? What really was happening to him? Why had he so abruptly ceased scoring those news-making runs in those memorable innings?

But in that greatest of all nurseries of Indian Cricket – yes, in Shivaji Park – none of those boys had the time to muse like me. There was only space here for spirited batting and bowling – and no one you got to snatch a word with dreamed of setting records. It was the spirit of the Gita all the way – chase the goal not the reward. Just like Sachin did.

Bat like Sachin. Live like Sachin. That was what these boys were here to learn.

Yes, on that evening, despite the cruel diagnoses being made in the media, Sachin was in every cricketing soul in the country’s finest lab. “There! You did it! That would have made even him proud! There! Yes! Yes! Hold the bat like him. No, not like that, but like that!” one kid was shouting to his mate. And I could see that none of this was about dreaming, but doing. And doing it like him. There was a great deal more in the same vein at the legendary 'Guru' Ramakanth Achrekar's nets. As I observed the spectacle I could not help going down memory lane to visit those old days – and every time I did that the dominant image was of a chubby, baby-faced, ten-year-old with curly hair, carting his cricketing kit bravely into Shivaji Park.

So, well, it was hard to believe that only five days back this prodigy was sweating at the Chinnaswamy Stadium; and the way he had looked around him it would have seemed as though he was entering it for the first time in his life. But just the same, after that injury and the break it forced him to take, Sachin seemed happy to be at Bangalore’s National Cricket Academy, two weeks ahead of the Indian team camp. He was clearly making plans that he would have no time for when the rest of them touched base.

Life’s good!

Making it big in Bollywood isn’t easy and who would know better than this model turned actor. There was a phase when Arjun Rampal didn’t watch his own films, but thankfully things have changed for the good for this hard working fella’. After a lot of criticism, Arjun came back with a bang with flawless performances in Om Shanti Om, Rock On!! and The Last Lear. Rampal’s next release EMI, reportedly, reminds him of the days when the recovery agents kept reminding him of the repayment time for the loans he’d taken! Times have really changed… eh?

Zardari’s statement on Kashmir could suggest a shift

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's interview with the Wall Street Journal in which he had termed militant Islamic groups operating in Kashmir as "terrorists" has generated a furore amongst the fundamentalist forces in Pakistan. However, saner elements in the country have hailed the daring statement.

"Pakistan is committed to resolve the Kashmir dispute through peaceful means. However, any outside interference in that state will be detrimental to the cause of Kashmir. Zardari, in fact, has denounced non-Kashmiri militants who are bent upon bringing a bad name to Pakistan," said Dr Mutahir Ahmed, professor of International Relations at the University of Karachi.

In an interview with Bret Stephens of The Wall Street Journal, Zardari welcomed a free-trade agreement with India. "India has never been a threat to Pakistan," he said, adding, "I, for one, and our democratic government is not scared of Indian influence abroad."

Surprisingly, Pakistan's military establishment that dominates policies related to India, Kashmir and nuclear issue did not reacted adversely to Zardari's utterances. In fact, his stance ushers a new era in Pakistan-India relationship. The Pakistan president also did not object to the India-US nuclear cooperation pact, so long as Pakistan was treated 'at par'.

"Why would we begrudge the largest democracy in the world getting friendly with one of the oldest democracies in the world?" Zardari was quoted as telling The Wall Street Journal. Zardari imagines Pakistani cement factories being constructed to provide for India's huge infrastructure needs and Pakistani textile mills meeting Indian demand for blue jeans.

"For a country that spent most of its existence trying to show that it's the military equal of its neighbour, the agenda amounts to remarakable recognition of the strides India has made in becoming a true world power," observed The Wall Street Journal. Enlightened political analysts feel it's time Pakistan foregoes jingoistic policies with India.

"Kashmir issue has never been discussed in Pakistan parliament and even after 60 years, it is not clear that under whose orders armed bandits were sent to Kashmir in 1948 because the founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was averse to such intervention," said Tauseef Ahmed Khan, associate professor at Karachi's Urdu University.
